On October 19th, 2005, a group of Blueberry growers, MSU extension employees, and industry representatives met in Holland, Michigan to discuss the possibility of forming a committee that would represent the entire Michigan blueberry industry. While Michigan leads the nation in both blueberry production and acreage, its growers have never had a cohesive method for setting blueberry research and MSU extension priorities, advising local organizations such as the Department of Agriculture, Michigan State University, and Farm Bureau, and lobbying all local, state, and federal governments. Those in attendance voted for the creation of the Michigan Blueberry Advisory Committee (MBBAC) as a vehicle for insuring the success of Michigan blueberry growers in a global economy. The MBBAC elected its first Board of Directors on December 5th, 2006 at its meeting at the Great Lakes Fruit and Vegetable Expo in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
